Possum Trot Golf Club is located in the heart of North Myrtle Beach, one of the most vibrant areas of the Grand Strand. Opened in 1968 and originally designed by Russell Breeden, the course has been particularly popular among local players as well as vacation visitors ever since. It is also considered one of the best-value courses in the area, with well-kept TifDwarf Bermuda greens and 18 holes that weave in and out of palmetto and pine and around ponds and bunkers.

Possum Trot is one of relatively few golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area whose fairways are not lined by houses or condos, representing a “core golf” experience. It derives its challenge and guile less from hazards—water only comes into play on seven holes—than narrow fairways and smallish greens. This places a premium on ball-striking but keeps the course playable for players who may spray the ball from time to time. Bunkers often guard the sides of fairways and greens, allowing players to play lower approach shots if they so choose. The most notable hole is the 18th, a 535-yard par five. A straightaway tee shot and layup leave a wedge or short-iron third over the corner of a lake. The shorter an approach the golfer chooses to pursue, the more challenging the layup, as that lake starts to affect the second shot, too. Three bunkers guard the putting surface as well, making the hole a potential site of a big swing in fortunes in any match.

Off the course at Possum Trot, golfers have access to well-appointed facilities. A practice putting and chipping green and grass driving range, with a practice bunker, are available on-site for pre- and post-round practice sessions. In addition to an excellent practice facility, Possum Trot is also the site of a well-regarded golf academy run by award-winning teacher Mike Passmore. The staff at Possum Trot is also available to organize golf outings, from a small-scale gathering to a full-field corporate day.
